The Germanic name Gerda comes from the Old Norse garor, meaning "closure." In Norse mythology, Gerda is the goddess of enclosed fertility, and her sacred places include greenhouses, orangeries, and atriums, botanical gardens, vegetable and flower gardens, both urban and home. In Poland's recent history, Gerda, meanwhile, is a company producing doors, locks, and fittings that Poles used to lock themselves in on the threshold of the new millennium. Gerda is also a duo of Wojciech Bąkowski—an audiovisual artist who creates drawings, animated films, and LPs—and Jan Piasecki—a cross-style electronic musician and drummer associated for years with the London-based collective Uncanny Valley. The duo's creativity—regarding their name—comes from within; from a closed, carefully cultivated world that is dreamy and fairy-tale like the old legends from the North and at the same time also ordinary and everyday like that characteristic, cylindrical key in the pocket.
