Real Friends

Listening to music can transport us to a world of sensual experiences, and when we close our eyes, multicolored images inspired by the sounds appear. BOY's debut album, "MUTUAL FRIENDS," is like a sea breeze—fresh, invigorating, and certainly inspiring such vivid dreams. It's no coincidence that the album opens with the promise that "this is the beginning of whatever you want"... (track "This Is The Beginning").

BOY is an exciting, young duo formed by Valeska Steiner from Zurich and Sonja Glass from Hamburg. Their work is difficult to categorize – the girls have their own unique style, are incredibly charismatic, and original. Their music is a blend of pop and indie rock, alternately moving and funny, inspired by everyday stories.

The album "Mutual Friends" is a record of various events, including autobiographical ones. The track "Drive Darling" is a recollection of Valeska's experience leaving Zurich, leaving behind her family home and friends. The song "Waitress," meanwhile, captures the melancholic mood of a waitress who has been working in one place for too long and wondering when her life will truly begin. The album's lead single, "Little Numbers," was the last track created during the recording sessions. This is perhaps why the song is imbued with a dose of uninhibited joy. It's the product of fun in the studio, as the musicians reach a long-awaited moment when they can relax and have fun—in some cases, wrongly assuming—that all the work has already been done. On the album's closing track, "July," we hear empathy in Valeska's voice, and the lyrics leave the listener with the feeling that after a journey, it's good to be home again.

In an era when pop music can sound banal and cheap, leaving a sweet aftertaste, like cheap chocolate bought in a hurry at a small gas station, the duo BOY's album challenges these banalities. Poetic realism, captivating melodies, and an intoxicating blend of sounds can enliven even the dullest day.
