An excellent album from talented soul singer Aloe Blacc, "Good Things".
The album is promoted by the popular track "I Need A Dollar," a blend of funk and hip-hop, distinguished by its unique piano, distinctive bass, and trumpet. In 2010, the single became the theme song for the popular HBO television program "How To Make It In America."
Aloe Blacc, a native of Southern California, began his musical career in 1995. Together with hip-hop producer Exile (who has collaborated with artists such as Mobb Deep and 50 Cent), they formed the group Emanon, which focused on indie rap. A few years later, while on a European tour with Lootpack, Aloe met a then-little-known producer/rapper named Madlib. The musicians discovered a shared passion for music. Their acquaintance with Madlib and his brother, Oh No, resulted in Aloe Blacc's debut album, "Shine Through," in 2006. This album showcased the diversity of Aloe's musical talent. Listeners discovered that he could rap and sing in both English and Spanish; he produced and played the trumpet. Those who attended his concerts were convinced that he was a great dancer and had the ability to captivate audiences.
On his second album, "Good Things," Aloe focuses on himself. His voice is stronger, more mature, and his lyrics are thoughtful, repeatedly touching on social issues. Collaborating with Truth & Soul, Aloe Blacc has produced a timeless soul album that's a pleasure to listen to from start to finish.
